The skeletal remains of a man alleged to be a pirate executed in the 16th century and buried under a primary school playground may be the remains of a 16th century pirate .
It is believed that the skeleton belongs to a man who could have been executed for piracy or other crimes before being buried in a shallow, unmarked grave.
The bones were found by council workers during survey work for an extension at Victoria Primary School in Newhaven, Edinburgh.

Experts dated the bones to the 16th or 17th centuries and, working with forensic artist Hayley Fisher, created a facial reconstruction of the man, thought to have been in his fifties.
The school, the city’s oldest working primary, is located near Newhaven harbour where a gibbet once stood on the dockyards 600 years ago.
It is believed that the man could have been executed for piracy or other crimes before being buried in a shallow, unmarked grave.
Archaeologists said the condition of the bones and location of the burial close to the sea and gibbet, rather than at one of three nearby graveyards suggests the man was killed before being displayed as a warning to other pirates.
Head teacher, Laura Thompson, of Victoria Primary School in Newhaven, Edinburgh where a skeleton was found, said:“The pupils think it’s fantastic that a skeleton was found deep underneath their playground.
“The archaeologists will hold a special lesson with some of the children about how they have used science to analyse the remains and it will be a good learning opportunity for them.”

Policemen in Lagos have caused an accident while trying to extort money from commercial tricycle riders and it can resulted in the death of two persons.

About two persons were reported dead on Saturday, while others sustained injuries after a Sports Utility Vehicle, SUV, rammed into a tricycle at the Iyana School bus stop in the Igando area of Lagos State.
According to DailyPost, the SUV hit a commercial bus which in turn crashed into another tricycle. Among the two persons killed, was the driver of the SUV who died on the spot. The other victims, including a pregnant woman, were said to have been rushed to a hospital.
The accident, which occurred at about 5pm on Saturday, was said to have happened while policemen from the Igando division stopped the tricycle driver and were allegedly extorting money from him.

According to a motorist, who simply identified himself as Emmanuel, it was the third accident at the bus stop in the week. Emmanuel alleged that the accident was caused by some policemen who were searching tricycles at the junction to collect money.
The policemen according to Emmanuel normally extort money from the drivers. Speaking with Punch, Emmanuel said:
“So, they stopped the tricycle, and were in the process of extorting money from him when the incident occurred. An SUV rammed into the tricycle and a commercial bus. The bus in turn hit another tricycle, killing the driver.
“The accident caused gridlock in the area as rescuers tried to pull out victims who were trapped in the bus. On the spot, we saw two corpses including the tricycle driver. This would be the third accident at the bus stop this week due to the police’s overbearing attitude.”

The men of the Ogun State Police Command have apprehended a large number of teenage boys parading themselves as cultists in the state.

Several suspected robbers and cultists were arrested in various odd places across Ogun State on New Year’s eve by the police.
According to a statement from the State Police Command Headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta, signed by the State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, operatives attached to Ota Division of the Command nabbed more than 20 cultists that have been terrorising on residents of Araromi area of Ota.
The suspects were arrested on the eve of the New Year, 31 December, 2015 at about 11pm. The leaders of the gang are Asari Samson,17,and Ola Samuel,17. Weapons such as axes, rods and dummy guns were in their possession when police operatives swooped on them during one of their operations and they were arrested while other members took to their heels.
Another set of cultist members were arrested, also in Ota, four months after they initiated a young boy into the group. According to the statement, the young boy was initiated in a bush at Destiny Estate, Ota in Ado-Odo/ Ota Local Government Area of Ogun state, last August around 9pm.
The suspects were arrested on New Year day, Friday, 1 January 2016, when the father of the initiated young boy saw them and immediately reported to the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, Ota Police Division, who swung into action and arrested four of the cult members.
Those arrested include: Ismail Yusuf, 19, Oyeleye Ibrahim, 26, Dayo Ayo, 14 and Adeleke Segun, 18, while other members are now at large.
Adejobi said: “The suspects have all confessed to the crimes and we have credible evidence to prosecute them.
“While planning for a hitch free yuletide season in Ogun, the Command pounced on criminals and cultists in the state and sniffed them out of their hideouts, through constant raids.
“Many were arrested with weapons, including sophisticated guns, and that was why the Command had the last season as the most peaceful so far.
“There is no doubt that many of these cultists are the armed robbers and/or criminals who have been terrorizing the state and that’s why the Command will not relent in its war against cultism in Ogun state.”
Buhari Was Misled Over N47bn Lawmakers' Exotic Cars - National Assembly
The National Assembly has raised alarm over the accusation making the rounds that it plans to spend over N47bn on exotic cars for the Senate as it clears the air.

The National Assembly on Sunday said its members were eager to meet with President Muhammadu Buhari over the President’s “claim” that the National Assembly planned to spend over N47bn to buy exotic cars this year.
The House of Representatives, on its part, stated that a meeting with Buhari would put the records straight on how the President got his figure, since the legislature had not contemplated “making such a mind-boggling” expenditure.
Buhari had, during his maiden Presidential Media Chat on Wednesday last week, wondered that the National Assembly planned to buy cars worth over N47bn, in addition to taking car loans and generous transport allowances.
“I can’t see the National Assembly spending more than N47bn to buy cars on top of transport allowance they collect.
“I have to revisit that story. The budget for their transport allowance comes up to N100bn. With the kind of money that goes into the National Assembly, we have to look at it conscientiously and see how we can live within our means,”he had said.
Buhari announced that he would hold a closed-door meeting with the legislators to discuss the issue. However, both the Senate and the House of Representatives in their separate reactions less than 24 hours after the media chat, denied that there was a plan to buy cars worth the amount the President quoted.
Speaking with The PUNCH on Sunday, House Minority Leader, Mr. Leo Ogor, said the members were prepared to meet with the President, where the lawmakers planned to ask him how he arrived at the figure. Ogor stated that since making the announcement last week, there had been no communication from the Presidency on when the meeting would take place.
But he told The PUNCH that members were willing to meet with the President to address the “misinformation for the purpose of avoiding needless crises.”
He added, “There is no meeting fixed that I am aware of for now.
“But, as a House, we welcome discussions with Mr. President to avoid unnecessary frictions.”
The minority leader also pointed out that the President made “several assumptions” about his powers, especially in relation to the power of appropriation. According to him, Buhari, during the chat, seemed to assume that all the proposals of the executive in the 2016 budget of N6.08tn were sacrosanct and did not require any scrutiny by the National Assembly.
“We advise that, in keeping with the principle of separation of powers, he should read sections 4,5,6 and 80 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) jointly for clearer understanding of which arm of government has the power of appropriation.
“All that is contained in the entire budget remains a mere proposal until approved by the National Assembly the way it deems fit,” he added.
Ogor added that the National Assembly too would need to be convinced why the Presidency proposed to buy cars worth about N3.5bn this year. He argued that while nobody raised eyebrows over the Presidency’s budget on cars, a “non-existing” figure of N47bn was quoted for the National Assembly as its planned expenditure on exotic cars this year.
The lawmaker stated, “The Presidency proposed to buy cars for almost N3.5bn, there is electrical wiring of almost N300m.
“There are so many proposals in the Presidency’s budget that we think should be subjected to thorough discussions. Some of the proposals in the Presidency’s budget may not even stand.
“Where we are not convinced, we will remove and take some sub-heads to areas we think they are needed.”
He claimed that Buhari took the wrong step my starting a “media war” with the National Assembly in his first media chat. The lawmaker observed that the option of opening discussions with the National Assembly on issues he might not have been “adequately briefed on” should have preceded the media war.
Also, the Senate spokesperson, Senator Sabi Abdullahi, said the red chamber was prepared to meet with Buhari on the proposed plan by the National Assembly to purchase official vehicles for the 469 federal lawmakers.
Abdullahi told one of our correspondents on the telephone that media reports on the issue, which quoted various sums of money being the cost of procuring the vehicles, actually misled members of the public on the issue.
He explained that the exact amount that the vehicles would cost could not be determined by the National Assembly at the moment because the contract for their procurement had not been awarded.
He added, “We in the Senate are ready and prepared to meet with the President on the issue. There is no way we can exercise our legislative functions especially in the area of oversight, using our personal cars.
“We need official vehicles to move around the country because we do not have to rely on government agencies under our supervision for such logistics if we really have to carry out an unbiased exercise.
“Nigerians should also note that we are not asking for too much by requesting Sport Utility Vehicles as official vehicles because there is no senator or member of the House of Representatives that cannot afford one. So, to us it’s not a luxury but a necessity to do our work better."
Abdullahi appealed to Nigerians, especially the media, to cooperate with members of the National Assembly in the task of performing its constitutional roles of providing necessary checks and balances for effective governance.
US Warns Rwandan President, Paul Kagame Over Third Term Bid
The United States has expressed its disgust at Rwandan President's bid to go for a third term against the constitutionally stipulated two-term.

The United States said on Saturday it is “deeply disappointed that President Paul Kagame has announced his intention to run for a third term in office”.
The spokesperson for that country’s Department of State, an equivalent of Nigeria’s foreign ministry, said with his decision to take a third shot at the Rwandan presidency,“President Kagame ignores an historic opportunity to reinforce and solidify the democratic institutions the Rwandan people have for more than twenty years laboured so hard to establish”.
The statement by John Kirby added, “The United States believes constitutional transitions of power are essential for strong democracies and that efforts by incumbents to change rules to stay in power weaken democratic institutions.
“We are particularly concerned by changes that favour one individual over the principle of democratic transitions.
“As Rwanda moves toward local elections this year, presidential elections next year, and parliamentary elections in 2018, we call upon the Government of Rwanda to ensure and respect the rights of its citizens to exercise their freedom of expression, conscience, and peaceful assembly — the hallmarks of true democracies.
“The United States remains committed to supporting the free and full participation of the Rwandan people in the electoral processes ahead.”
Mr. Kagame recently instigated a constitutional change in his country which cleared him to run for a third term of office. The adjustment of the presidential term rules was done despite the unfolding political crisis in neighbouring Burundi. At least 200 people have died and tens of thousands have left the country after months of violence and protests since President Pierre Nkurunziza declared he would seek a third term in office, which he then won in a contested vote in July.
Mr. Nkurunziza, a former Hutu rebel leader, became Burundi’s first democratically elected president after its civil war, but is now reluctant to leave power.
In a touch of irony, Mr. Kagame recently gave a speech pointedly critical of Mr. Nkurunziza, saying he was allowing his people to die.
“No one knows where he is, no one can talk to him, how he leads his people, people are dying every day, dead bodies are being dragged on the streets every day,’’ Mr. Kagame said.
In October, Congo Republic voted in a referendum which cleared its 72-year old President, Denis Sassou Nguesso, to legally stand for a third consecutive term in next year’s election. In October 2014, Burkina Faso’s leader of 27 years was toppled, amid violent protests as he made to stay put in office.
