Whatsapp To Discontinue Update on Blackberry and Nokia Phones

Popular chat application on smartphones, Whatsapp is set for discontinuation this year following a pronouncement by the company.

Earlier this week Whatsapp celebrated its 7th year anniversary with its 1 Billion Active users, instead to break a bad news on such a good day, the team decided to wait till on Friday when they announced that the app will soon be discontinued on BlackBerry and Nokia devices running those company's operating systems.

Yes! that include the Blackberry 10 device. Though the new Android-powered Blackberry Priv slider phone might probably survive this heat because it was built with Android OS.

According to the announcement made by Whatsapp:

As we look ahead to our next seven years, we want to focus our efforts on the mobile platforms the vast majority of people use. So, by the end of 2016, we will be ending support for WhatsApp Messenger on the following mobile platforms:

1. BlackBerry, including BlackBerry 10

2. Nokia S40

3. Nokia Symbian S60

4. Android 2.1 and Android 2.2

5. Windows Phone 7.1

While these mobile devices have been an important part of our story, they don't offer the kind of capabilities we need to expand our app's features in the future.

The Nokia S40 discontinuation will deeply affect developing countries like Nigeria because most people still use old Nokia phone. The likes of Nokia asha 200 and 203, Nokia 6100, 6200, Nokia C2 and C3 just to mention a few.

I know most of us still love our old nokia phones. WhatsApp suggests "upgrading to a newer Android, iPhone, or Windows Phone" if you want to keep on using the service — if not, you'll need to find another messaging service by the end of the year before the service get discontinued.

Woman's Breastfeeding Photos Causes Controversy Online

A woman has hit the headlines after she posted a hot photo of herself breastfeeding her baby in public.
The controversial photo of the child and her mother

Dressed in an emerald green, floor-skimming satin dress with her hair swept back in a wet-look chignon, Haddas Ancliffe looks every inch the stylish wedding guest as she poses for a picture. But the blogger wasn’t the only one making an appearance in the snapshot, as the new mum was also joined by her 18-month-old son, who she was breastfeeding at the time.

‘Just me and my baby having a drink (Gotta do what you gotta do, wedding or not)’
the 21-year-old blogger, who goes by the name Dahsi, wrote captioning the Instagram shot with the hashtag #normalizingbreastfeeding.

Since posting the candid snap has been liked 2,619 times and received over two hundred comments many praising the mum for highlighting the normality of breastfeeding. Haddas Ancliffe uses her blog to try and normalise parenting issues like breastfeeding.

‘It’s so nice to see you put your baby’s needs before your own,’
one follower wrote.

‘Keep on doing what you do and be strong. Let’s normalize breastfeeding and make people realize how wonderful it is,’ added another

But while many comments came down on the positive side of the morality fence, some criticized the mum for ‘over-sharing.’

‘It’s cool you’re breastfeeding but don’t need to show it to the world,’
wrote one

‘Haha why post this on instagram. Do this in private,’
one man wrote

Another felt even more aggrieved by the shot writing that the photo made them feel 'ill’.

Others stepped into defend Ancliffe’s choice to share the image: 'How can people not been ok with this but ok with a girl in a skimpy thong bikini or less.’

Claiming she uses her blog as a platform for ‘self expression and open sharing’, this isn’t the first time Ancliffe has shared photos of herself breastfeeding her son Jonah in a bid to breakdown breastfeeding in public stigmas.

And she’s also used the photo sharing site it to tackle body issues, inspiring other mothers by sharing unedited photos of her post-baby body. Alongside a picture of her stomach the honest mum wrote:

‘So this is my tummy nearly 11 months postpartum. It’s covered in stretch marks, has a little sag and is nowhere near as flat as it used to be'

Social Media: Nobody Can Gag Nigerians - Dele Momodu

Dele Momodu has re-stated the inability of powerful forces to gag social media which has now become a viable tool of advocacy and activism in Nigeria.
Dele Momodu

Ovation Publisher and former Presidential candidate, Chief Dele Momodu has said that any plan to gag social media will fail, saying Nigerians are resilient people and will not succumb to such threat, according to the Vanguard.

Speaking during his keynote address, “The Power of Social Media,” at the City People Social Media Awards held on Sunday in Lagos, Momodu said Nigerians survived the move by erstwhile dictator, Gen Sani Abacha’s plan to gag the citizens, hence attempt by government of the day to ban social  media will fail.

“Any attempt to gag us will fail. It will never happen. Abacha tried and failed. Any attempt by any government to stop social media will fail. It is not about protests in the streets, or security agents going after you. Some of us fled this country during Abacha. I was involved with Freedom Radio, sometimes we had to broadcast using the phone. But with the social media, from your room, you can talk to millions of people and no one can stop you.”

The Ovation publisher also said that after the magic of electricity and telephone, the social media is the greatest invention by man. On how he became a social media influence, he said the journey started in 2010 with Facebook.

‘’I started using Social media in 2010, Facebook was the most common one then, When I got on Twitter not long after, I actually asked people to manage my account. I just past instruction that I want an announcement on the micro-blogging platform and it is carried out.

‘’But by January 2012, during the fuel subsidy protests, I realized how powerful the 140 character on Twitter has when I decided to reach out to a lot of people as I was the only one who carried a banner and protested in London, US, Ghana and Nigeria. I had about 13, 000 followers when I took over the management of the Twitter account; since then I have been addicted.

“The power of the social media is huge; you can reach millions in seconds. We are witnesses’ to what the change agents of the APC were able to do with the candidature of President Buhari,”
he said.

He urged youth not to underestimate the power inherent in new media considering the reach influence people from the corner of one’s bedroom.
