Sleeping Too Much Could Cause You to Go Blind - Shocking New Research Reveals

If you are the kind of person who sleeps a lot, then you might want to reconsider as a disturbing new study has revealed grave consequences associated with it.

Sleeping too much could cause you to go blind, eye doctors have warned.

Hitting the snooze button too often could damage your eyesight as research has revealed that getting more than eight hours a night can lead to macular degeneration - the leading cause for blindness in the UK.

Those who sleep in longer are also seven times more likely to suffer from geographic atrophy, the advanced stages of the condition.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a disease that gradually destroys sharp, central vision. It’s the leading cause of severe vision loss in people over age 60 .

While there’s no pain, it sees a deterioration of the macula - the part of the eye that allows you to see fine detail - makes driving and reading near impossible.

Research by doctor Rahul N. Khurana, of the Northern California Retina Vitreous Associates, assessed patients with and without the disease.

Dr Khurana surveyed 1003 patients and assessed their sleep patterns, publishing his findings in the journal Retina.

He said: “The mean sleep duration for patients without AMD was 7.97 hours, compared with 8.17 hours, 9.00 hours, and 8.97 hours, respectively, for those with early AMD, neovascular AMD, and geographic atrophy.
“The altered sleep patterns illustrate another morbidity that patients with AMD suffer from, and merit further investigation.”

These findings come after scientists found that sleeping face down on your pillow could also lead to sight loss.

Pressing your face into a pillow while you sleep could cause a condition called glaucoma, which worryingly goes undiagnosed in thousands of people every year.

Glaucoma occurs when a fluid in the eye called aqueous humour fails to drain properly, putting pressure on the optic nerve which can cause the nerve fibres inside to die off and lead to sight loss.

The study - carried out by John Hopkins University, Baltimore, USA - tested the effect of pillow pressure on the eyes of its subjects over an eight-hour sleep period.

It found sleeping with one side of the face and one eye pressed into a pillow can cause ‘sustained deformation’ of that eye in patients with glaucoma.

Lead researcher Dr. Alison Flatau said that deformation of the eye while sleeping might block outflow of aqueous humour which in turns leads to elevated intraocular pressure (IOP).

She added: “If stress and strain from elevated IOP are bad for eyes with glaucoma, stress and strain from being compressed by a pillow might also be bad for eyes with glaucoma.
“On average, glaucoma eye responses did not fully return to baseline levels after moving from face down to supine, but control eyes did."

Dr. Flatau also added that those with ‘prominent’ noses or cheekbones, which prevent direct contact with a pillow, might prevent sleep position-induced deformation of the eye, while those with small cheekbones and a tiny nose are more likely to suffer.

Laser eye surgeon Dr. Allamby, founder and medical director of Focus Clinic, said: “Glaucoma is a silent killer when it comes to the eyes.

“Sufferers often don’t know they have it until they’re already losing their vision.
“And what this study shows is that people could be making the condition worse - effectively speeding up the damage - by simply sleeping in the wrong position.

“This slight increase of pressure on the optic nerve could have significant repercussions in those susceptible to nerve damage.”

Early diagnosis of glaucoma is vital in saving a patient’s vision, whether treatment is through eye drops, laser treatment or surgery.

Dr. Allamby recommends regular, in-depth eye examinations by an optometrist at least once every two years for those in their 40s.

172 Nigerians Deported from Libya

Many Nigerians illegally living in Libya have been ejected from the country after being found guilty of overstaying their welcome.

The Libyan Government on Friday deported 172 Nigerians over several immigration irregularities according to the Nation.

The deportees arrived the hajj camp area of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport around 7:00am comprising 166 males and six females.

The Public Relations Officer, Nigeria Immigration Service(NIS), Mr. Ekpedeme King confirmed the deportation with a correspondent on phone, but could not give the registration number of the aircraft that brought them into the country.

The deportees were repatriated into the country with chartered aircraft from Libya.

The returnees were received by various agencies such as Immigration that checked their identities to ascertain their nationalities, Police, National Agency for Protection and Trafficking in Persons, NAPTIP, and other relevant stakeholders.

As at the time of filing this report, the returnees had moved away from the Lagos Airport to their various destinations. King told a correspondent that the deportees were returned to the country for overstaying their visas in Libya and other immigration offenses in the North African country.

He said, “What I can tell you is that some Nigerians were deported today (yesterday) for immigration offences. Most of those brought overstayed Libya.

One of the deportees, who simply identified himself as Chris claimed that he traveled out of Nigeria about two years ago in search of greener pastures.

He however insisted that he didn’t commit any crime in Libya that would warrant his deportation back to Nigeria.

Last November, about 76 Nigerians were deported from three European countries including United Kingdom.

Presidency Apologises to Nigerians Over Nationwide Blackout

The federal government has apologised to Nigerians for the persistent power failures, blaming the situation on gas failure as well as sabotage and vandalisation of power infrastructure.
Lai Mohammed

In a statement issued in Abuja on Friday by Segun Adeyemi, special adviser to Lai Mohammed, minister of information and culture, the President Buhari-led federal government has apologised to Nigerians for the persistent power failures, blaming the situation on gas failure as well as sabotage and vandalisation of power infrastructure.

The federal government said that all efforts were being made to rectify the situation and ensure a gradual improvement in the power situation.

"There will be a decent improvement in the power situation from this weekend, thanks to ongoing remedial efforts that will double the current power supply to 4,000WM. Getting back to the 5,074MW all-time high that was reached earlier will take a few more weeks," Mohammed said.

The minister said that at a time the routine maintenance by the Nigeria Gas Company had affected the supply of gas to power stations, forcing down power supply from an all-time high of 5,074 MW to about 4,000MW, a combination of unsavoury incidents further crashed the power supply to about half that figure.

"The vandalisation of the Forcados export pipelines forced oil companies to shut down, making it impossible for them to produce gas. Then, workers at the Ikeja DISCOS, who were protesting the disengagement of some of their colleagues after they failed the company’s competency test, apparently colluded with the National Transmission Station in Osogbo to shut down transmission.

"Finally, the unfortunate strike by the unions at the NNPC, over the restructuring of the corporation, shut down the Itarogun power station, the biggest in the country. Due to these factors, only 13 out of the 24 power stations in the country are currently functioning. It is this same kind of unsavoury situation that has affected fuel supply and subjected Nigerians to untold hardship."

The minister condemned the situation in which some Nigerians, under the guise of the various unions in the oil and gas sector or sheer vandalisation, would continuously sabotage the country’s power infrastructure.

"The bitter truth is that for as long as these groups of Nigerians continue to sabotage the power infrastructure, Nigerians cannot enjoy a decent level of power supply. We therefore admonish all Nigerians who may be agitating for their rights in whatever form to refrain from any action that will further hurt the same people they claim to be protecting," he added.

Breaking News: Popular Actress, Ibinabo Fiberesima Sentenced to 5 years Imprisonment

Popular actress, Ibinabo Fiberesima has been sentenced to 5 years imprisonment by Justice Deborah Oluwayemi, on March 16, 2016. Ibinabo was visibly apprehensive throughout the proceeding and burst into tears immediately the judgment was delivered.

The Court of Appeal Lagos Division on Friday dismissed an appeal filed by ex beauty queen, Ibinabo Fiberesima challenging a Lagos High Court judgement which sentenced her to serve five years in prison for the death of one Dr. Giwa Suraj.

The Nation reports that the embattled president of the Actors' Guild of Nigeria (AGN) was sentenced by Justice Deborah Oluwayemi for reckless driving which caused the death of Suraj in an auto accident along the Lekki-Epe Expressway, Lagos.

Recall that about 10 years ago, the actress drove recklessly, causing the death of one Giwa Suraj in an auto accident along the Lekki-Epe Expressway in Lagos.
Suraj was a staff of a Lagos state hospital before the incident.

Speaking on the judgement, her lawyer, Nnaemeka Amaechina, said it would be challenged at the Supreme Court adding that a Notice of Appeal had been filed already.

The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command had in 2005 charged Fiberesima to an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court on a two-count charge of dangerous and reckless driving along the Lekki- Epe Expressway, Lagos which resulted in the death of Suraj.

She was awarded a N100, 000 fine by the Court, but this decision was tested at the High Court by the Lagos State Government.

At the High Court, Justice Oluwayemi set aside the option of N100, 000 fine imposed and sentenced Fiberesima to five years imprisonment for dangerous and reckless driving.

She held that the trial Magistrate exercised judicial recklessness when he gave the convict an option of N100, 000 fine and this did not serve the purpose of justice.  She subsequently ordered that the N100, 000 should be returned to Fiberesima.

The court added that Section 28 of the Road Traffic Law clearly provides that where a reckless and dangerous driving has caused the death of a person, the accused person shall be guilty of an offence and is liable on conviction to imprisonment of seven years.

Dissatisfied, Fiberesima in her amended appellant brief filed by her lawyer, Nnaemeka Amaechina before the Court of Appeal urged the court to set aside the five year sentence and restore the decision of the Magistrate Court.

Amaechina had argued that the Magistrate’s Court exercised its discretion properly and there was no ground to review it by the high court.

He submitted that by virtue of the Notice of Increased in Jurisdiction of Magistrates, No. 7 of 2006, the trial Magistrate could only impose a maximum of 7 years imprisonment or N100, 000.00 fine.

He added that N100, 000.00 fine is the maximum limit the trial Magistrate can impose as fine and that was what it imposed on the appellant.

In her response, counsel to Lagos State, Rotimi Odutola (Mrs.) argued that the law creating the offence of dangerous driving causing death has provided for a term of imprisonment as punishment for anyone convicted under section 28 hence the trial Magistrate ought not to exercise such arbitrary discretion to impose N100.000.00 as fine.

Odutola further submitted that the children of the deceased have been permanently deprived of the "measureless contributions" of their father to their lives as a result of his death caused by the appellant.
