Surveillance video captured the moment a foolish thief tried to steal Serena Williams' cell phone and was caught when the tennis ace sprinted after him.

Earlier today tori.ng reported the story of Serena Williams' superhero move. Serena Williams had posted the story on Facebook, saying she was out to dinner with a friend when a man came over and stood silently next to her at the table.

Now, a video taken from inside and outside the San Francisco restaurant - where Williams was dining with a male friend who appeared to be Reddit founder Alexis Ohanion - shows just what happened next when the athlete turned vigilante sprung into action after the man snatched her phone.

Williams wrote on facebook thus: 'Not thinking I reacted (hence the superwoman photo) I jumped up, weaved my way in and out of the cozy restaurant (leaping over a chair or two) and chased him down,' wrote Williams on Facebook Wednesday.

'He began to run but I was too fast. (Those sprints came in handy) I was upon him in a flash!'

The video shows that is indeed just what happened, as Willaims appears to effortlessly make her way through the crowd and is able to quickly catch up with the unidentified man.

And despite being the victim, Williams tried to give the idiot thief the benefit of the doubt.

'I kindly asked him if he "accidentally" took the wrong phone,' said Williams.

'He stumbled on his words probably not expecting this to happen. While he was thinking of the right thing to say and eventually he said "Gosh you know what I did! It was so confusing in there. I must have grabbed the wrong phone."'

Williams said she then thanked the man, took her phone and returned to her dinner.

UNILORIN Releases 2 Certificates After 16 Years of Legal Battle

Two ex-students of the University of Ilorin have finally received their certificates after 16 long years of waiting.

 

The University of Ilorin has released the certificates of two ex-students withheld 16 years ago. This move has been lauded by the Education Rights Campaign (ERC), an NGO.

Vanguard reports that the affected students are: Mr Lanre Akinola and Mrs Rasheedat Adesina.

A statement released by the ERC said the degree certificates were withheld since 1999 and 2001 respectively as punishment for their involvement in students’ unionism and struggle to end military rule.

It said Adesina was Assistant Secretary-General of the UNILORIN Students’ Union while Lanre Akinola was member of Students Representative Council of the students’ union.

“The release of the withheld certificates has put an end to the erroneous belief of the administrators of academic institutions that they cannot be compelled to release academic results and degrees.

“It gives hope to all victims of repressive, dictatorial and vindictive administrations in every sector of the society that it is possible to defeat the oppressors.

“It also underscores the fact that the battle for justice may be long, victory is certain if we remain resolute and committed’’, it said.

The statement listed the predicaments of the duo to include participation in anti-Abacha rally staged on campus on June 4, 1998 and students’ protest against poor welfare conditions on campus on June 5 of the same year.

“Their predicament with the university administration under the leadership of the then Vice-chancellor, Prof. Shuaib Oba Abdul-Raheem, started in June 5, 1998 following students’ protest against poor welfare conditions on campus.

“The anti-Abacha rally staged on campus on June 4, was organised by Joint Action Committee of Nigeria (JACON) under the leadership of late Chief Gani Fawehinmi.

“The released certificates indicated falsely that Lanre Akinola and Rasheedat Adesina graduated in 2015 instead of 1999 and 2001 respectively.

“Nevertheless, it is a victory for students’ activism, the poor and oppressed people of the society. It is also a confirmation that there is a limit to institutional enmity and lawlessness.

“This victory came after the judgment of the Supreme Court in 2014 upheld the judgment of Appeal Court which had earlier ordered the release of the certificates and awarded damages against the university’’, the statement said.

It was learnt that their deaths were in connection with cult initiation by a confraternity in the town.

 

The parents of the teenagers when contacted by correspondents, said they were too devastated to speak to the press. They said that they did not want the incident reported for fear of police harassment.

 

A source who craved anonymity, said the boys died of complications which resulted from drinking a 'hard substance,' which was part of the initiation, adding that the boys voluntarily sought to join the confraternity.

 

"From what I gathered, one of the boys was given a very hard concoction to drink during his initiation into Eiye confraternity by the leaders of the cult group. The substance, which was laden with very hard drugs, led to the death of the poor boy," the source said.

 

A new twist has emerged in the controversy surrounding the teenagers’ deaths. Another account has it that the boy took performance enhancing drugs which overstretched his system and led to his demise.

 

According to this account, four teenagers were involved in taking the concoction known in local parlance as Sukudie and were rushed to the Specialist Hospital, Kabba, before two of them died. The two survivors, according to the source, are Ebira boys from Okene.
