I Won't Devalue Naira - President Buhari Yet Again Rejects Devaluation of the Nation's Currency

President Muhammadu Buhari has reiterated that his position not to approve further devaluation of the Naira, saying that Nigeria, which is not an exporting nation, would be worst hit if the Naira was devalued.

While contributing to a Presidential Panel Roundtable on Investment and Growth Opportunities at the opening session of the Africa 2016: Business for Africa, Egypt and the World at Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, President Muhammadu Buhari has again ruled out the possibility of his government devaluing the naira.

 

The president said on Saturday that the priority of his administration was to ensure national food security before export of food products, adding that Nigeria being a mono-economy dependent on oil, and with a teeming unemployed youth population, the way out of the current slump in the global oil market, is for the administration to focus on agriculture and solid minerals development.

 

"The land is there and we need machinery inputs, fertilizer and insecticides," he said.

 

Reiterating his opposition to the devaluation of the naira, President Buhari said Nigeria cannot compete with developed countries which produce to compete among themselves, and can afford to devalue their local currencies.

 

"Developed countries are competing among themselves and when they devalue they compete better and manufacture and export more. But we are not competing and exporting but importing everything including toothpicks. So, why should we devalue our currency?" the president asked.

 

"We want to be more productive and self-sufficient in food and other basic things such as clothing. For our government, we like to encourage local production and efficiency."

 

He added that those who have developed taste for foreign luxury goods should continue to pay for them rather pressure government to devalue the naira.

 

President Buhari, who expressed optimism that Nigeria would get out of its current economic downturn, noted that another major problem militating against economic revival is the huge resources deployed towards fighting insurgency and international terrorism.

 

He, however, commended the support being received from the international community in the administration’s fight against terrorism as well as cooperation in tracing looted funds stashed away in foreign countries.

 

Responding to a question on his performance since he assumed office, the president said that his administration had been quite focused on three fundamental issues of securing the country, reviving the economy and stamping out corruption.

“The message on corruption has been driven home vividly and Nigerians are very acceptable to the message,” he said, adding that those accused of stealing public funds are cooperating by voluntarily providing useful information while investigations and prosecutions are ongoing.

 

Before departing Egypt, President Buhari and his Egyptian host, had a bilateral discussion on security, military cooperation, agriculture and solid minerals development.

Nigerian Professor Set to Receive America's Highest Honor for Scientists

A Nigerian genius professor has broken very much into the world of science and is now set to receive the U.S government's highest award for scientists.

Highly acclaimed professor, Deji Akinwande has been selected to receive a '2016 Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE)' by President Barrack Obama, the United States government’s highest honor for scientists and engineers in the early stages of research.

 

Prof. Akinwande is an associate professor in electrical and computer engineering and the Jack Kilby/Texas Instruments Endowed Faculty Fellow in Computer Engineering in the Cockrell School of Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin.

 

He is among 106 recipients announced by the White House on Thursday. The winners, who will be honored at a ceremony in Washington, D.C., this spring, were selected for having research that is both innovative and beneficial to society. Prof. Akinwande is one of two PECASE recipients from The University of Texas at Austin. The other recipient is Prof. Keji Lai from the Department of Physics.

 

Now in its 20th year, the Presidential Early Career Awards are coordinated through the President’s Office of Science and Technology Policy, which selects winners “for their pursuit of innovative research at the frontiers of science and technology and their commitment to community service as demonstrated through scientific leadership, public education, or community outreach.”

 

Prof. Akinwande is known for his groundbreaking research on nano-materials, sensors, devices and flexible technology. He is considered one of the top researchers in the world in the areas of graphene, silicon electronics and 2-D nano-materials for use in flexible electronics. In 2015, Akinwande created the first transistor out of silicene, the world’s thinnest silicon material, and he is continuing to advance the capabilities of computer chips and other electronics.

 

Prof. Akinwande has been the recipient of several prestigious awards, including the Inaugural IEEE NANO “Geim and Novoselov Graphene Prize,” an IEEE Early Career Award in Nanotechnology, a National Science Foundation Career Award, an Army Research Office Young Investigator award, and a Young Investigator award from the Defense Threat Reduction Agency.

 

Previously, Texas ECE professor Mattan Erez received the PECASE award in 2014 and Prof. Seth Bank received the PECASE award in 2009.

Popular Nigerian singer, Wizkid, has come for top blogger, Linda Ikeji on social media after reading an article that said she was mentally poor.

A Lagos based Lawyer, Abiodun Olamide Akinola, wrote an article about Linda Ikeji and talked about her suffering from mental poverty.

 

Wizkid, after reading the article, went on social media to mock the blogger. First he tweeted "nice read" quoting the link to the article. He later went on Snap-chat to mock her openly.

Buhari Must Stop Deceiving Himself and Short-Changing Nigerians - Fayose Blows Hot Over Fallen Naira

The Governor of Ekiti State has slammed the economic policies of President Muhammadu Buhari saying the naira has already been devalued.

The highly outspoken Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose has called for the devaluation of the nation’s currency, the Naira, saying; “With the gap between the official rate of N199 and open market rate of over N400 to one dollar, Naira has already been devalued. Therefore, President Mohammadu Buhari must stop deceiving himself and short-changing Nigerians, especially States and Local Councils in the country with his Forex Policy.”

Fayose, who said there was no time in the history of Nigeria that the gap between dollar official rate and open market rate was more than N200, pointed out that it made no economic sense for the Federal Government to be calculating the country’s revenue on the basis of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) official rate of N199 to a dollar while States and Local Councils that are sharing the revenue with the Federal Government run their businesses at the open market rate of over N400 to one dollar, thereby causing business to be folding up by the day and prices of goods skyrocketing everyday.

Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media to the governor, Lere Olayinka, in a statement issued in Ado-Ekiti on Sunday, quoted the governor as saying that apart from breeding corruption through round tripping or foreign exchange arbitrage, Nigerians are also being duped and middle class Nigerians, the main people that grows the country’s economy are being decimated.

The governor said President Buhari was applying his 1984 failed economic policy in which prices of goods were fixed not minding the cost of supply, such that essential commodities like milk and sugar became scarce and Nigerians were made to line up in the sun to buy rationed commodities.

He urged the President to pay more attention to the ailing economy of the country instead of junketing around the world, wasting $1 million per foreign trip, saying; “President Buhari has traveled to 24 countries in eight months, and will be spending 16 out of the 29 days in February outside the country, with over $500,000 being spent on estacode while the Presidential Air Fleet, which includes fueling of the planes and allowances for crew members is said to be in the range of $500,000.

“The President’s entourage obviously collect their travel allowances in dollars on official rate of N199 and come back to Nigeria to change it at the open market rate of N400. That must be the reason they encourage the President to be junketing abroad when life is becoming unbearable for Nigerians.”

The governor said; “The situation is such that Nigeria gets say $2 billion revenue in a month, calculates the $2 billion revenue on the basis of the official CBN rate of N199 and share the revenue among the three tiers of government.

“In elementary economics, the implication is that when revenue is calculated based on N199 to one dollar and the federal government will be declaring say revenue of N400 billion to be shared by the three tiers of government, the value of revenue that should have been shared will be over N800 billion at the open market rate of N400 to one dollar.

“Meanwhile, the three tiers of government pay salaries to workers on the basis of N199 per dollar while the workers pay for goods and services which prices are determined by the open market rate of N400 to one dollar.

“Also, Nigeria is now faced with a situation whereby funds are obtained from the official Forex market (at lower rates) and diverted to other markets and sold at a higher rate by Forex dealing banks and users, who make billions of naira profit just for doing almost

nothing.

“Therefore, the reality that we must all accept is that we must allow the forces of demand and supply to determine the value of our currency, not administrative fiat. Most importantly, the government does not have the reserves to keep the naira-dollar rate at its official level.

“The Naira must therefore be devalued. Anything other than this will mean that we are deceiving ourselves with forced foreign exchange rates and it is my position that this regime of deceit must stop.”

A Man Confesses That He Stole His Boss's Car To Attend Valentine's Day Party

A man who has been nabbed over his involvement in stealing his boss's car for the sole purpose of driving to a valentine party, has given the rather absurd reason behind his action.

 

 

Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, RRS, of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested a 26-year-old man, Emmanuel John, for duplicating the car key of his boss, Mrs. Flora Ighalo, and later absconded with it without the knowledge of the owner, Vanguard reports.

 

The suspect was arrested at Abraham Adesanya Estate, Lekki penultimate Sunday night by the operatives for stealing his boss’s car, a Toyota Corolla, Epe 642 DX with the aim of taking the car to a valentine party at Splash Hotel, Sangotedo, Ajah. 

 

According to John, he had about a week before carrying out the act cut the Toyota Corolla key without the knowledge of his boss. 

 

However, on February 14, 2016, Sunday afternoon, when he was not supposed to be at work John sneaked into the Abraham Adesanya Estate residence of her boss and drove the car away with the duplicated key.

 

John narrated thus, “I and my friend, Oscar, wanted to carry the Toyota Corolla to Splash Hotel’s Valentine Show on Sunday night. I persuaded Madam to give the go ahead to cut a spare key but she declined. A week before, February 14th, I duplicated the key without her knowledge in Obalende. 

“Though, she excused me from work on Sundays, I sneaked into her resident and took away the car after church. I took the car to my residence in Ajuwe Area, Ajah, Lagos."
